Kentucky’s unemployment rate in September fell to 8.4 percent from a revised 8.5 percent in August, according to the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. The preliminary September jobless rate was 1.1 percentage points below the 9.5 percent rate recorded for the state in September 2011. The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate fell to 7.8 percent in September from 8.1 percent in August, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. In September 2012, Kentucky’s civilian labor force was 2,073,316, an increase of 4,515 individuals compared to the previous month. A new coffeeshop named Endowment Bay, named after the Fidalgo Bay coffee it will serve, opened Oct. 31 inside Murray-Calloway County Hospital. Proceeds from coffee sales benefit the hospital’s endowment fund for capital construction projects and equipment, according to a hospital statement. “We use this fund to purchase needed equipment for the hospital that may otherwise be on a long waiting list,” said Keith Travis, vice president of institutional development. “As a not-for-profit hospital, MCCH reinvests its money back into itself but there is always a need for new technology.” The shop is just outside the Medical Arts Pharmacy and is open from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday-Friday. Two western Kentucky Convention and Visitors Bureaus brought home Traverse Awards from the Kentucky Travel Industry Association’s annual conference in Bowling Green. The Paducah CVB received six Traverse Awards, and the Murray CVB received four. The Paducah CVB received first-place honors for the Paducah Visitors Guide 2012-13, promotional video, rhythm E-newsletter and Paducah billboard. It garnered second-place honors for use of social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) and the Celebrate Quilting rack brochure. Baptist Health, formerly Baptist Healthcare System, announced that Trover Health System in Madisonville joined Baptist as its eighth hospital in the state. On Nov. 1, Trover Health System became Baptist Health Madisonville. Baptist Health, headquartered in Louisville, owns Paducah’s Western Baptist Hospital, and is Kentucky’s largest health care provider by total licensed bed capacity with more than 2,400 licensed beds. Surgeons Dr. James W. Pledger and Dr. Michael L. Bobo announced a full partnership under the practice name, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Their practice has two locations, one in Murray and another in Union City, Tenn. Pledger joined services with Bobo in an associate relationship two years ago. Computer Services, Inc. of Paducah announced that its board of directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of 14 cents per share plus a one-time special cash dividend of $1 per share. The quarterly cash dividend is payable on Dec. 26, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on Dec. 3. The one-time special dividend of $1 per share is payable Dec. 3, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on Nov. 20. The board also authorized a $5 million increase in the company’s share repurchase program. The $5 million increase in the share repurchase program brings the total to $65 million since CSI’s share repurchase program was initially announced in March 2004. As of Nov. 7, retail gasoline prices in Kentucky averaged $3.35 per gallon, according to kentuckygasprices.com. Average retail gasoline prices in Kentucky fell 2.9 cents per gallon in the previous week. That compared with the national average that had fallen 5.6 cents per gallon in the previous week to $3.51 per gallon.
