Reidland native Ron Hunt (above) remembers when his products innovation firm CD3 was $5 million in the red, and his debt was spread over 64 credit cards.

Today the Austin, Texas, company projects a $20 million year selling CD and DVD cases, lifelike puppies and kittens that appear to breathe, and a new weight-loss contraption that former Olympic gold medal gymnast Mary Lou Retton markets.

“You’ve got to believe in your idea, and you’ve got to stick to it,” he said. “When you have one product, companies don’t want to fool with you. They want you to take up a whole section of the rack.”

After two years of development, Mary Lou’s Weigh platform debuts at 10 p.m. July 27 on the QVC shopping network with Retton as guest. The gizmo is a reinvented bathroom scale that doesn’t reveal actual weight but tells how much people weigh over their target. Retton’s voice motivates and guides them through 10-pound weight-loss goals.
